2 Shows That Offer a Different Look at Womanhood – Episode 118

This episode highlights two great shows from Netflix, Orange is the New Black and Grace and Frankie.

I don’t usually do a mini-study on TV shows, but I was so impressed by these shows that I just had to!

They both look at womanhood with different perspectives than the view we are used to seeing in the media!

Orange is the New Black has a ensemble cast filled with a variety of great characters. These characters face a similar life in prison but have come from very different pasts. The characters in this show identify in very different ways: black, white, Latina, Asian, old, young, lesbian, bisexual, trans, sick, healthy, urban, rural… And many more!

Grace and Frankie looks at starting over in life through the eyes of two, very different 70-year-old women. In what other show can you watch older woman be sexual, say “shit,” and talk about vaginal dryness? None, I say!

If you’re looking for a new show that looks at the real lives of women, check out this episode for two great ideas!

The Pleasures of Being a Dirty Woman (Perhaps Not What You Think!) – Episode 112

This episode looks at the reasons why I love being a dirty woman. When I say dirty, I mean dirt-dirty, not a dirty-talker.

I also look at the language difference between dirty–a word with a soiled and ruined connotation and dirty–a word with an exalted yet grounded connotation. You have to understand the difference between the usages of the word to truly understand why I love being a dirty woman.

The pleasures of being dirty exist in stages. They are:

  • Starting off clean
  • Getting dirty, smelly, maybe sun-kissed, bug-bitten, and/or cut by doing a physical activity and completing a valuable task
  • Getting clean again and in doing so reminding yourself that you can embody both classic femininity and also dirty and strong femininity

Check out this episode… You kind of have to hear it to understand it!

What “Womanhood” Means to Me – Episode 23

This episode is one of my personal favorites so far in O Woman! Podcast history (herstory)! The idea for this episode kind of sprung up on me as I was driving home from work yesterday in my old station wagon. I have a lot of history with this wonderful and clunky wagon, seeing as it was the car I owned when I was 18 through 24 years old. I recently reacquired it from my parents, and during my first day driving it again I was reminded of my young womanhood and how I grew up to become the woman and person I am today.

This episode is close to my heart! In it I talk about what being a woman means to me personally and also my universal ideas about womanhood and humanhood. To me, your womanhood is personal but also universal, and your idea of womanhood should be centered around yourself and the person you want to be, valuing traits that you admire (and that you have!).

Your womanhood is less about personality and physicality and more about a morality that reflects your life and our shared human condition! Your womanhood is framed by your experiences (like learning to ask for what you want, being your naked self, or a natural childbirth experience) and your continually growing wisdom.
